Personally, I thought Tom Hanks was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with John Corbett.
Second Chorus / That’s Dancing! was an incredible movie! Both Fred Astaire and Paulette Goddard were amazing! The great cast includes Fred Astaire, Paulette Goddard, Artie Shaw, Charles Butterworth, Burgess Meredith. If you love watching Fred Astaire or Paulette Goddard, you are definitely going to want to watch Second Chorus / That’s Dancing!
Second Chorus Fred Astaire stars in this swing musical. He plays a trumpet player in competition with another musician for the affections of their manager (played by the beautiful Paulette Goddard), who fends off their attentions while struggling to get them paying gigs. But who can resist being swept off her feet by the elegant Astaire? Goddard (at the time wife of movie legend Charles Chaplin, who starred with her in the classic comedy Modern Times) dances the light fantastic with Astaire in this delightful treat from the heyday of movie musicals. Songs include the Oscar-nominated “Would You Like to Be the Love of My Life?.” A fine musical for all fans of Fred Astaire!
Bonus Material: That’s Dancing With Fred Astaire Fred Astaire danced with some of the loveliest leading ladies ever to grace the silver screen. Here is a selection of original theatrical trailers that enticed audiences into movie houses during the golden era when Fred Astaire ruled as king of Hollywood’s musical stars– and his partner (whoever she might be) was queen.
Meg Ryan (YOU’VE GOT MAIL) and Hugh Jackman (X-MEN) are paired as star-crossed lovers who discover that passion and chivalry never go out of style! When a rip in time brings together a charming 19th century bachelor and a thoroughly 21st century woman, the potential for an old-fashioned modern romance ignites! Also starring Breckin Meyer (ROAD TRIP) and Liev Schreiber (SCREAM 3).
Just as Roberto Benigni found himself on the receiving end of some finger-wagging for making a comedy set during the Holocaust, so the great Ernst Lubitsch caught some heat for this extraordinary 1942 satire set behind enemy lines during World War II. In his best performance on film, Jack Benny stars as Joseph Tura, the lead actor and head of a Polish theater troupe that is suddenly enlisted as a Resistance organization when an American pilot (Robert Stack) requires protection. The twist is that the pilot has been having a series of trysts with Tura’s wife (Carole Lombard), the hilarious evidence being the disruptive departure of Stack’s character from a theater audience each night as the hammy Tura unknowingly cues the lovers by launching into Hamlet’s famous soliloquy. The remarkable script by Edwin Justus Mayer ingeniously folds the tensions of a betrayed marriage into the comic suspense surrounding Tura and company’s efforts to pull off a Mission: Impossible-like sting on the local Nazi command. Many unforgettable moments and lines of dialogue adorn this black comedy, and the performances–most memorably Sig Ruman’s crisp volleys with Benny–are a dream. Above it all, however, is Lubitsch’s unmistakable Continentalism, his accent on Old World manners especially in a dangerous situation, suggesting the Nazis’ very vulgarity was a reflection of their profound evil. –Tom Keogh
